A massive treasure hunt across Texas just took a dramatic turn, and now the clock is ticking.
We caught up with Seek Texas creator KC Wright, and what he told us might surprise you because even though someone did find the hidden medallion, they may not actually win the $70,000 prize.

How This All Started
If you haven’t been following along, Seek Texas is a statewide treasure hunt created by KC Wright and his mom, Liz. And yes, the backstory is just as incredible as the hunt itself.
KC joined Hawkeye and Michelle and them how it all started after he and his 92-year-old mom appeared on Wheel of Fortune, where she “knocked it out of the park” and helped them win the money that eventually funded the treasure.
From there, they turned a lifelong dream into reality.
Inspired by childhood stories like Treasure Island, KC created a puzzle-based adventure where players had to: Buy a clue-filled book, solve a series of riddles and track down a hidden medallion somewhere in Texas
That medallion is worth $70,000 in gold.
The Problem: Someone Found It, The Wrong Way?
Last week, things got wild. KC revealed that someone did locate and move the medallion, even sending him pictures asking what to do next.
But here’s the issue. “You’re supposed to figure it out yourself,” KC told us. According to him, it quickly became clear that the person didn’t solve the puzzle the intended way. Instead of following the clues organically from the book, something else may have led them there.
Did AI Crack the Treasure?
KC believes a key mistake may have opened the door. He mentioned a photo published in Texas Monthly showing the general type of location where the medallion was hidden. Then, during a public Q&A, he accidentally revealed that someone had once been “standing on it” without realizing it.
That combination may have been all it took.
Shortly after, multiple people suddenly showed up at the exact same location. “Nobody has found it in a year… and then in one day we had eight people saying, ‘Hey, I’m at this site and there’s no coin.’”
So Who Wins the Money?
That’s where things stand right now. KC is giving the person who found the original medallion until 5 PM today (April 15) to prove they actually solved the puzzle. To do that, they must correctly explain the code on the back of the coin.
If they can’t? The next person gets 48 hours. Then the next and so on…
If none of them can solve it, KC says the prize will go to the first person who correctly solves the puzzle from the book and submits the right answer.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about finding something in the ground. KC made it clear: “You’ve got to play the game right… and solve all the puzzles in the book.”
The goal is to protect the integrity of the hunt and reward the person who actually cracked the clues.
What Happens Next?
According to KC, we could have a winner very soon. “We’re holding our breath,” he told us. “We want somebody to win.”
And there’s even more heart behind it. His mom, now nearly 95, hopes to meet the winner in person one day.
Bottom Line
The treasure may have been found… but the puzzle isn’t solved yet.
And until someone proves they did it the right way, that $70,000 in gold is still up for grabs.
