Ahead of her performance at Texas Independence Jam at Billy Bob’s Texas, country star Megan Moroney sat down with Hawkeye and Michelle for a candid conversation aboard her tour bus.
The interview touched on a topic fans have been buzzing about since the release of Moroney’s new album Cloud 9: the song “Who Hurt You?” and speculation that it references fellow country star Riley Green.
After the track debuted, fans quickly began connecting dots online. The speculation intensified when Green appeared to respond by writing and posting a song of his own on social media, fueling rumors that the two artists might be trading musical shots.
Hawkeye and Michelle decided to address the buzz directly during their backstage conversation.
Michelle began by asking Moroney about the vulnerability she brings to her songwriting and how openly she approaches the stories behind her music.
Michelle: “On that vulnerability, you said in an interview that you’re not hiding anything in these songs. Like if people want to Google it, they can find out who it’s about, because you just said ‘screw it.’”
Moroney explained that her approach to songwriting has shifted toward complete honesty, rather than trying to be subtle about real-life inspirations.
Megan Moroney: “Being sly about it has just gotten me uncomfortable in interviews. So I’m like, if you listen to the song and you still have questions, I don’t think you listened to the songs. That was the new approach of this album. I’m just going to say exactly how I feel and how it went from my point of view.”
That opened the door for Hawkeye to ask the question many fans had been wondering about: how she felt about someone potentially responding publicly to a song written about them.
Hawkeye: “Well, how do you feel about someone who may have Googled that song and says, ‘Hey, that’s me in that song,’ and then writes a retort and posts that?”
Megan Moroney: “That’s none of my business. Free will is one hell of a job. You can do whatever you’d like to. I said my piece, and I’ve got nothing else to say.”
Moroney later took the stage at Billy Bob’s as part of the annual Texas Independence Jam. While fans may continue to analyze the lyrics and online responses, Moroney made one thing clear during her conversation with Hawkeye and Michelle: she’s said what she needed to say in her music.
